IMG_3463.jpg - The Bunker Hill Monument on Breed's Hill- though the Battle of Bunker Hill is generally considered a success, the Americans actually lost.  The British won but with devastating losses.  The architect of the obelisk was Solomon Willard, it stands 221 feet tall and is constructed of blocks of granite cut from a quarry in Quincy.  Transportation dilemas led to the country's first commercial railway.  The Marquis de Lafayette laid the cornerstone in 1825.  Daniel Webster's words at the ceremony, "Let it rise! Let it rise!  Till it meets the sun in its coming.  Let the earliest light of the morning gild it and parting day, linger and play upon its summit."
